World number 2 Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Italian Open in Rome due to a hip injury.
The problem emerged during her victory over Russian Karen Khachanov in Madrid and forced the Italian to withdraw from her quarter-final against Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime.
Now Sinner joins world number 3 Carlos Alcaraz in missing the Italian Open due to injury, a tournament both men would have been favorites for.
“It’s not easy to write this message, but after speaking again with doctors and specialists about my hip injury, I will not be able to play in Rome,” he said in a statement on X .

Sinner will join Alcaraz and world number 4 Daniil Medvedev – who is yet to withdraw but retired injured in Madrid – in the race to be fit for the French Open, which begins in Paris on May 26.
