Borussia Dortmund reached the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 2013 after a thrilling 5-4 aggregate win over Atletico Madrid.
Edin Terzic’s side trailed 2-1 from the first leg in Madrid but scored twice in succession in a thrilling second leg in Dortmund to seal a 4-2 win and progress.
Julian Brandt put Dortmund ahead in the 34th minute before Ian Maatsen, on loan to the German club from Chelsea, doubled their lead on the night and gave them an overall lead five minutes later.
Atletico Madrid equalized four minutes after halftime when Dortmund defender Mats Hummels accidentally clipped the ball into his own goal.
Diego Simeone’s side took the lead on aggregate 15 minutes later when Angel Correa put them ahead, but Dortmund striker Niclas Fullkrug headed in seven minutes later to make it 3 -2 for the hosts.
Three minutes later, Marcel Sabitzer, scorer of Dortmund’s second and third goals, pounced on a loose ball in the Atletico penalty area and found the net with a fierce finish.
Dortmund will face Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-final after their 6-4 aggregate victory over Barcelona in the evening’s other tie.
