Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell is expected to miss this weekend’s rookie minicamp at Allen Park due to a personal matter, a team source confirmed Friday. The Detroit Free Press first reported the news Friday.
Detroit’s 2024 rookie class will head to Allen Park this weekend for minicamp, featuring a host of undrafted free agents and tryout players. Veterans and rookies are expected to return for team OTAs on May 21. Campbell, who is scheduled to speak before this practice, is expected to return by then.
Detroit will have two additional OTA periods in May before going through a mandatory minicamp during the first week of June. OTAs will end on June 10.
Campbell enters his fourth season as head coach of the Lions and, in 2023, helped guide the team to one of its best years ever.
Detroit won its first playoff game since 1991, tied a franchise record with 12 regular-season wins, clinched its first division title since 1993 and made the franchise’s second appearance in the NFC Championship Game.

The Lions spent much of this offseason attempting to retain key roster pieces that contributed to that success, signing wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and Penei Sewell to contract extensions and working on a extension for quarterback Jared Goff.
The Lions used the 2024 NFL Draft to bolster their defense, trading up in the first round to select cornerback Terrion Arnold, as well as cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in the second round.
