Jerome Boateng will not return to Bayern Munich after spending some time training with the first team, the club have confirmed.
In the year The 35-year-old, who spent a decade at Bayern before leaving in 2021, was invited to train with the club after injuries to Dayot Upamecano, Min-Jay Kim, Matijs de Ligt and Tarek Buchmann. Options.
Upamecano and Kim are back in the first team while De Ligt continues his recovery and Bayern have opted not to bring back Boateng, who is a free agent after leaving Lyon in the summer.
Bayern’s decision to re-sign the defender has been disputed in a court case over an alleged serious injury.
Remind me who botting is…
Jerome Boateng, 35, is a centre-back who has won the 2014 World Cup with Germany, 2 Champions Leagues (2013, 2020) as well as 20 major trophies with Bayern Munich and the 2010-11 FA Cup with Manchester City. In the year He was voted German Footballer of the Year in 2016.
What and who was accused first?
In the year He denied all the charges.
What did his club do at the time?
Current Bayer president Uli Hoenes officially told Boateng to look for a new club in May 2019, but he continued to play for them and became a key part of their 2019–20 treble-winning squad. When the trial began at the end of 2021, Boateng was not under contract with the German champions but was playing for French club Lyon, where he had spent two seasons.
What happened in the trial?
Boateng is accused of causing grievous bodily harm and insulting his ex. He was fined €1.8million (£1.6m; $1.9m). Boateng, public prosecutors and the alleged victim have all appealed the verdict. After a second trial, in October 2022, the guilty verdict was upheld. The judge said he was “absolutely satisfied” that Boateng punched, kicked, spat on and abused his ex-girlfriend. The fine was reduced to €1.6m in relation to Boateng’s deductible income at the time, but the sentence was heavy, unlike the first trial, which resulted in a criminal record.

Why was the decision of the Court of Appeal overturned?
All three parties appealed once more, asking for Boateng’s acquittal and prosecutors for more punishment. After a third hearing, the decision was overturned by the Bavarian Supreme Court of Appeal last month. The judge said it “doesn’t remotely stand up to legal scrutiny,” citing “numerous procedural errors,” such as improper interpretation of conflicting evidence, and an appeals court judge wrongly deciding bias by Boateng’s own lawyers. The Supreme Court again ruled.
Is he re-signing for Bayern?
No.
Boateng, who left Lyon when his contract expired last season, has been training with Bayern since Sunday. But the club confirmed on Friday that Upamecano will not be back and that Kim has returned to first-team action after injury and Delit has made progress in his recovery.
Bayern’s statement read: “The personnel situation in the center of defense is stable. By all accounts, Bayern have now decided not to sign Boateng. At the same time, as a famous former player, he has been given the opportunity to maintain his skills at the club. Boateng showed himself in good physical condition.
Sporting director Christoph Freund said Bayern would “first take into account the importance of a possible return to sport”, calling the legal issue “a private matter that does not concern us more”. Manager Thomas Tuchel said Boateng was innocent until proven guilty and that Bayern “have the right to make footballing decisions” until the trial continues.
Will there be another court hearing?
Not necessarily. Boateng, who has no criminal record, can strike a plea deal to get a reduced sentence and negotiate with his ex-girlfriend about restitution.
Who made the decision?
Bayern’s (all-male) board of directors decided to reinstate Boateng.
Why do you need them?
Bayern have just three senior centre-backs on their books after a last-minute attempt to strengthen their squad this summer failed. Midfielder Leon Goretzka and right-back Nusseir Mazraoui had to play in central defense against third division Preussen Münster in the DFB Pokal (Germany’s FA Cup equivalent) last week, with Kim, De Ligt and Upamecano out through injury.
What do fans think about this?
There is a lot of criticism on social media. Club Nr 12, the umbrella organization for Bayern’s fan clubs, declined to comment publicly, but told local newspaper Abendzeitung: “The club must always take its own rules and the fans’ feelings into account.”
