Brentford defender Ager has signed a long-term contract

Christopher Ager has signed a new contract at Brentford that will keep him until the summer of 2028.

The Norway international has made 12 appearances for Thomas Frank’s side in all competitions this season and has made 50 appearances for the club since his summer 2021 move from Celtic.

Ajer has featured in 10 Premier League games for Brentford this season – matching his total from last season, which was hampered by injury.

Confirming Ajer’s new deal, Brentford head coach Frank said: “I am delighted that Christopher has extended his contract.

“In his first two seasons with us, he was very unlucky with injuries. He never got that hit or run of the game.

“He is now playing regularly at centre-back and right-back and I think he will play both positions at a high level.

“Christopher has shown consistency and quality in this latest set of games, which I’m pleased about.

“He has improved his aerial skills in both boxes, and we know he has good quality on the ball. He is very quick to recover in defensive transitions.

“Kristoffer is getting better and better. He is working hard to realize his potential and we are excited to have him take those next steps with us.

Ajer joined Brentford in July 2021 for a club-record fee of £13.5m ahead of his first season in the Premier League. The centre-back started the first six games and made a crucial goal-scoring haul in the 3-3 draw with Liverpool. However, he struggled to maintain consistency for the remainder of the campaign due to a persistent hamstring injury.

The Norway international also struggled with form last season and was limited to just nine appearances. Ajer has benefited from a full pre-season and has been brilliant for Thomas Frank over the past few months. With Aaron Hickey out until next year with an injury, Ajer has seized the opportunity to become first choice at right-back.

The 25-year-old’s dribbling runs have become a valuable asset for Brentford and he provided the assist for Bryan Mbewmo in August’s 3-0 win over west London rivals Fulham. In last month’s 2-1 defeat at Manchester United, he made Marcus Rashford superb. Frank Ajer admits he has performed well for Brentford and this reward reflects the growing importance of a long-term contract.
