National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) team Gotham FC will face Chelsea Women in a friendly match at Red Bull Arena, New Jersey on August 19.

The match pits the NWSL holders against Women’s Super League (WSL) champions Chelsea, who won their fifth consecutive title with a six-goal victory at Manchester United on Saturday.

It will be a summer of change at Chelsea with USWNT-bound Emma Hayes stepping down as manager after 12 years in the role. Athleticism reported that Chelsea had offered Lyon head coach Sonia Bompastor a contract to replace Hayes.

The friendly announcement follows goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger – who twice finished third in the FIFA Best Goalkeeper Award and spent six seasons at Chelsea – joining Gotham from Chelsea earlier this year.

Gotham won its first NWSL title last year, but is currently seventh in the 2024 standings, with 15 points from its first nine league matches.

The friendly will take place during Gotham’s championship campaign and will continue Chelsea’s preparations for the 2024-25 season, with the WSL scheduled to begin on the weekend of September 21-22.
